What is World Cancer Day?

World cancer day is celebrated on 4th February to mark the day when World Cancer Summit Against cancer for the new millennium was held for the first time. It was held at Paris. It is led by union for international cancer control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration formulated in 2008.

The theme for 2022 is “Close the Care Gap”. This theme is going to be for the next three years 2022-2024. This is a multi-year theme to build more global awareness and hence better impact. It is now understood that world cancer day is much more than just a day on calendar so the campaign also needs to bring change whose effects are felt long after the day itself.

The three year campaign
1.   2022- Realising the problem
2.   2023- Uniting our voices and taking action
3.   2024- together we challenge those in power

Realising the problem
2022- For the first year the aim is to understand and recognise the inequities in cancer care around the globe. There are various areas where we have inequalities on the basis of caste , creed , colour , sex which part of the world you live in etc . Everyone has the equal right for awareness and treatment of cancer.
Uniting our voices and taking action
in 2023 the main effort would be to join like-minded individuals to form a formidable force to fight for fairness. Newer alliances and collaborations would be planned for equity of cancer care.
As our campaign continues, we will join with like-minded people because we know that we are stronger when we are united. We will celebrate real-world progress in its many forms and allow that momentum to fuel our fight for fairness. We’ll do more than spread the word—we’ll shout it from the rooftops. We’ll build stronger alliances and innovative new collaborations.

Together, we challenge those in power
2024 - The last year of our campaign is all about bringing attention to to engage our leaders. With knowledge and a united community we would demand a commitment by those in power to priorities cancer care. #worldcancerday2022 #UICC #cancer
